When looking at the photograph of an alleged Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga, found at Atyrau on 5 October 2014 (Katuncev 2014), I was struck by the structure of the bird, more resembling Lesser Spotted Eagle A pomarina than Greater Spotted. Also, the bird shows obvious double carpal commas, indicating Lesser Spotted. I asked Andrea Corso to have a look at the picture. Underneath his comment: ‘A most interesting bird indeed !!! The photo is of a too poor quality for a serious discussion about details, such as the secondary barring. However, to me it is a 2nd cy and here are some comments: 1) the dark underwing coverts do not matter, there are many dark plumaged pomarina!! Remiges are even darker, which is not the case in clanga!! 2) the wing formula is WRONG for pomarina though…. the P4 being too long and pointed for a juv-2nd cy pomarina (ok for older and adults)… 3) general jizz and structure better for pomarina than for clanga 4) what I CAN see of the remiges pattern is something IN BETWEEN clanga and pomarina !! 5) tail seems also more ok for pomarina 6) double comma also better for pomarina; I have seen pomarina missing that pattern but I have never seen clanga showing it, only some presumed hybrids It is not a pure clanga…. you’re rigth in that for sure. A hybrid pomarina x clanga seems most likely.‘ When will the first Lesser Spotted Eagle be found? The Volga-Ural region seems the best place to look for it.
